JDSi’s role in the Town of Exmouth evolved from an initial engagement by the Shire of Exmouth as the Engineering Consultant for the Town’s Master Planning to being engaged as the Lead Consultant for the implementation of the Town’s Revitalisation, design and construction works.

Key Considerations

  • Working with local government to revitalise the Town Centre and improve the public amenity.
  • Working effectively and with minimal impact to existing operations.
  • Development of project specifications suited to North West Conditions.
  • Identification of servicing constraints.

Project Challenges

Tight Timeframes

Due to political requirements, the timeframe to deliver the first stage of works was extremely tight, JDSi ensured that the target dates were met by being proactive and taking the lead role in the delivery of the works.

Meeting Stakeholder and Public Expectations

Interest in the outcomes of the Exmouth Revitalisation Project was intensely scrutinized. JDSi made a point to contact interested stakeholders so their interests were expressed at project meetings and in the resultant planning outcomes.

Servicing and Staging Strategies

Due to changing market conditions and servicing constraints JDSi investigated a number staging options and strategies for the Revitalisation. Our extensive in-house rates for north-west projects combined with detailed construction knowledge enabled JDSi to provide development options to ensure a flexible and cost-effective development.

Drainage and Cyclonic Storm Surge

The Exmouth Revitalisation area is subject to inundation from cyclonic storm surge and overland flooding. Negotiations were required with State and Local Authorities to set building levels mindful of recent studies relating to long term sea level rise and overland flow routes.

Existing flood routes through Exmouth were becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. JDSi utilised detailed in-house information on flood mitigation in Exmouth, including previous flood studies, planning and design information across the town, as well as anecdotal information and combined this to provide a holistic approach to managing and maintaining flood routes both upstream and downstream of the development.

Managing the Challenges

During construction of these works all services were maintained to existing business properties and there were no safety incidents.
